New Unified Seating Block
As a result of HGC's advocacy efforts, for the first time in recent memory, Harvard College and Harvard graduate and professional students were seated in one unified seating block, creating a united student section that fostered the idea of One Harvard.
The Harvard Graduate Council led the initiative with the Harvard Athletics department to create a graduate seating section next to the undergraduate seating section. Graduate students packed the stadium for “The Game” for tailgating activities and to watch Harvard and Yale in an intense rivalry on the football field.
Together at the Tailgate
Graduate students from Harvard Extension Student Association enjoyed tailgating activities while students from the Harvard Business School African-American Student Union and Harvard Law School mingled and partied in tents adjacent to the Extension School tent. Further down the row, Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Office of Student Affairs held tailgating activities.
Students were excited to learn more about the Harvard Graduate Council. Harvard Law School student Titilayo Rasaki stated that she was glad to learn that there is an organization that represents all graduate students across Harvard University. Similarly, Harvard Extension School graduate student Jasmine Frankel reiterated the importance of creating unity among the students and creating better visibility for the council.
Jill Felicio, Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs for the Harvard Extension Alumni Association also echoed the importance of having an organization that represents One Harvard. Felicio expressed excitement about Harvard Graduate Council’s mission and the idea that all students are represented as a cohesive body at the university.
Closer to the Goal
Observation of the graduate students at the actual game was exhilarating. This year a new graduate student seating section was created adjacent to the undergraduate seating section, with the aim of creating one united student seating section. The new seating section was filled to capacity with graduate students from the Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School and other graduate students representing their respective schools.
From the press box, the section was the most lively and students enjoyed having the opportunity to mingle with students from other Harvard graduate and professional schools. Harvard Graduate Council helped to lead this initiative and will engage with the Harvard Athletics department in the future to discuss affordable pricing options to enable greater graduate presence at future Harvard-Yale games and to create events that are tailored to graduate students.
